Whose Life Is This?

Jordan’s five questions, set out as a printable page for anyone living a life that looks right but doesn’t feel like theirs.

Goes with the story End of the Line.

Read the story first

Before you start

This isn’t about throwing your life away. Jordan kept his job. It’s about noticing which parts of your life you chose, and which parts you just drifted into because they looked acceptable.

Steps

  1. Draw two columns. Label one “Chose it” and the other “Drifted into it.”
  2. List ten parts of your life — your job, where you live, how you spend Sundays, who you see, what you wear, what you do in the evenings. Put each one in a column.
  3. Look at the “Drifted” column. Circle one thing you’d like to look at more closely. Not change — just look at.
  4. Answer the five questions below, slowly. One line each is plenty.

Write

What do I actually want, if I’m honest with myself?

What have I stopped doing that used to feel like me?

What am I waiting for?

Who am I pleasing?

What would I do if nobody judged me?

Sit with this

Eli asked Jordan one question: “What did you used to do, before you got busy?” Sit with that for three minutes. Let the first answer come, then wait for a second one.

The Ripple

Do one small thing from your “used to” list this week. Jordan got off the bus one stop early and took one photo. Keep it that small.
