The Quiet Room
One thought for tonight
You don’t have to carry it all the way home. You can leave some of it on the bench.
Samuel’s Bench
Welcome, Neighbour
Stay as long as you need.
Everything in here is small and slow. Try one breath, one exercise, one short meditation, or just read the cards. None of it is therapy. It’s a quiet corner to catch your breath in.
Breathe with the light
Pick a rhythm and follow the circle.
The circle grows as you breathe in and settles as you breathe out. Streetlight breathing is a good place to start: in for four, out for six.
You can read the full steps in Streetlight Breath, Box Breath on the Bus and The Long Sigh.
If you feel light-headed or uncomfortable, stop and breathe normally.
Breathe
Three rhythms for the walk home.
Streetlight Breath
Breathe in for four, out for six, following the slow glow of a streetlight. A simple rhythm for the walk home or the edge of the bed.
Box Breath on the Bus
Four sides, four counts each. Small enough to do on the top deck of a bus without anybody noticing.
The Long Sigh
Two short breaths in, one long breath out. The one-minute reset for when you walk through your front door carrying the whole day.
Ground
Come back to where your feet are.
Five Things on the Walkway
A 5-4-3-2-1 grounding walk for the concrete walkways and stairwells of an ordinary day — noticing what’s actually here.
Feet on the Pavement
A standing grounding exercise for bus stops and queues. Feel the ground hold you, from your heels up.
Hands Around a Mug
A kitchen-table grounding practice. One hot drink, both hands, and five minutes of noticing before the evening starts.
Read aloud
Short meditations in the narrator’s voice.
Samuel’s Bench at Dusk
A read-aloud meditation. Sit on the bench beside Samuel as the streetlights come on, and let one question settle.
The Last Light in the Block
A read-aloud meditation for the small hours. Watching the lights go off, one by one, until only yours is left — and that’s alright.
Putting the Bags Down
A read-aloud meditation for people who carry everybody else’s shopping — literal or otherwise. Set each bag down, one at a time.
The Ripple on Still Water
A read-aloud meditation on The Ripple. Drop one small stone into still water and watch how far it travels.
Before You Sleep
A short read-aloud wind-down. Three questions to close the day kindly, then let it go.
